Swim to Fight Cancer

Swim to Fight Cancer started in Den Bosch in 2014, raising a massive €517,066. After much success in other cities over the past few years, the event is coming to Eindhoven on Saturday 26 August!

What is Swim to Fight Cancer anyway?

It’s a 2km open water swimming event to raise funds to kick cancer’s butt. It’s open to swimmers aged 16 and over, or for those who are at least 10, there’s a shorter 1.25km swim. Participants are expected to make a serious effort to raise at least €250.

A dip in the Dommel

It might not sound like the most inviting swim, but how often can you really have a dip in the Dommel? And it’s for a good cause. Cancer sucks, I think we can agree on that, and a 2km open water swim is nothing compared to what many people are battling.

Free Training

Training plays a big part in any sport, and Swim to Fight Cancer is no different. You’ll really need to be a regular swimmer. But if you’ve never done any open water swimming, the organizers are holding two free training mornings with coaches and experienced open water swimmers. It’s a great chance to become familiar with the differences between swimming in a pool and in open water. You’ll also receive tips and advice. Two training sessions are taking place – Saturday 12 August and Saturday 19 August at 9.00 at the Ijzeren Man, near the TU/e.

Not a swimmer? You can always volunteer!

There are quite a few jobs that need to be done to run this kind of event and the organizers are looking for volunteers to help with tasks such as assisting in preparations, traffic control, catering, first aid, administration, and they also need life guards. You don’t need to speak Dutch to volunteer so if you’re interested, you can fill in the online form. You can also send an email to

If you’d like to cheer on all the swimmers on the day, head on down to the Dommel (see the map below for the exact route). The event starts at 16:00 on Saturday 26 August. Best of luck to all the participants!
